The objective of this training is to broaden the participant’s knowledge of the technical information necessary to construct a shallow well that will meet technical specifications and supply sufficient good quality water for many years to come.

The repair of damaged handpumps is often an effective intervention in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) interventions. In order to enable WASH professionals to consider the rehabilitation of hand pumps within their work, a sound knowledge of different hand pump models is needed.

Presented below for you, dear reader, is a brief step by step list of the things that you need to take into account (from the humble beginnings until the end) when considering a water project.

1. Water percolates from the ground, either from a hillside or from beneath the box. At the inlet to each box, gravel is placed to filter out any soil that might seep in and dirt-ify the water. You’ll notice on the hillside spring box that large and small stones are also placed at the entrance to the box. This keeps the gravel from falling into the box.

When contaminated water is poured through a ceramic water filter, it is purified in three ways:

A pore size of 1.3 microns filters out turbidity, larger bacteria and parasites
Colloidal silver creates a hostile environment for bacteria, breaking down the cell membrane as it passes through.
One half inch of activated charcoal integrated into the core of the filter improves taste,odor, and color.

A ceramic water filter is a simple, bucket-shaped (11” wide by 10” deep) clay vessel that is made from a mix (by weight) of local terra-cotta clay and sawdust or other combustibles, such as rice husks.
